Acne Congested Skin Concern

Acne / Congested Skin Concern

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when pores become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. It can affect the face, chest, and back, and may present as comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), pustules, papules, or deeper cystic lesions. Left untreated, acne can contribute to scarring, uneven texture, and pigmentation changes.

Everyone’s skin is different, and acne can be influenced by hormones, lifestyle, stress, and bacterial activity. For this reason, we recommend a comprehensive skin assessment with one of our aesthetics therapists to determine the most effective treatment pathway for your individual concerns.

Treatments Available for Acne / Congested Skin Concerns

A personalised Skin Consultation is the first step for anyone seeking acne treatment at The Aesthetics Doctor. During this appointment, your therapist will:

  • Review your skin history and current concerns
  • Examine your skin condition and acne type
  • Discuss any scarring, texture irregularities, or pigmentation changes
  • Recommend evidence-based treatment options tailored to your skin needs

Our skin consultations are designed to help you understand your skin and explore the most suitable, results-driven treatment options — including but not limited to laser therapies, tailored medical facials, peels, light-based treatments, topical protocols, or combined approaches.

Retinoids

While retinoids are effective for treating acne, they may not always be recommended for rosacea, especially in the more sensitive stages. Retinoids can sometimes irritate the skin, which may exacerbate rosacea symptoms. However, in some cases, mild retinoids may be prescribed for people with rosacea to help with skin texture or acne-like breakouts (often called "acne rosacea"). It's crucial to use them under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Azelaic acid

A naturally occurring acid in grains such as rye and barley, azelaic acid has antibacterial properties. When applied to the skin in a cream, the compound cleans out the pores and protects against acne.

Azelaic acid is a good alternative to benzoyl peroxide, an antibiotic substance that’s also used in acne treatment. It’s worth noting that the compound takes longer to work than other acne treatments, so it may not be for everyone.

Light Treatment

Light therapy is another method of acne treatment that can help to kill bacteria on the skin. There are two types of light therapy, which include blue and red.

Blue light therapy has an antibacterial effect, removing any microbes that are clogging the skin. Red light treatment is often used for healing, reducing inflammation and is recommended for acne scars.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a great treatment for acne scar removal because it promotes the healthy growth of new collagen in the skin. Microneedling tools prick the skin to create small wounds, which stimulates this growth through healing.

Antibiotics

An effective way of controlling acne involves using antibiotics to eliminate skin bacteria and reduce inflammation. Depending on the severity of the acne, you may require oral or topical cream medications.

Tetracycline

Tetracycline is an example of an oral antibiotic that’s used to ward off acne and it’s usually combined with other medication to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic antibiotic that reduces microbes on the skin and may be combined with tetracycline.

What causes Acne / Congested Skin?

Acne and congested skin are caused by a combination of factors that affect the pores and oil glands:

  • Excess sebum production – Overactive oil glands can clog pores, creating an environment for breakouts.
  • Dead skin cells – When not shed properly, they mix with oil and block pores.
  • Bacterial growth – Cutibacterium acnes bacteria can proliferate in blocked pores, causing inflammation and pimples.
  • Hormonal fluctuations – Puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or stress-related hormones can trigger excess oil production.
  • Lifestyle factors – Poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, and certain skincare products can worsen congestion.
  • Genetics – Family history can make some people more prone to oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Medications or cosmetic products – Certain drugs or comedogenic skincare can exacerbate breakouts.

Regardless of the cause, we are able to offer solutions tailored to your individual needs. Book your consultation today to receive your custom treatment plan.
